Pattachitra Painting

A Clothing Canvas That Highlights Tradition and Mythology

Pattachitra is a combination of two words: “Patta” and “Chitra”. Here, patta means a piece of cloth, whereas chitra means a picture. Pattachitra painting is a traditional art form originating from the Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha. From the 10th and 11th centuries, the artists were making them to depict divine tales of God and Goddesses.

In Pattachitra paintings, artists usually depict stories from Hindu mythology. Sometimes, folklore and religious stories are also themes of these artworks. It looks like a hand-printed scroll. Now, they can be found in modern homes as decorative art.

How is Pattachitra Made?

Special canvas, such as cotton sarees or paper, is used for making them. Traditionally, natural and vibrant colours are used to bring the stories to life. Colours are applied without preliminary sketches, a unique feature of these artworks. Each Pattachitra takes from a few weeks to a month to make. In the end, it becomes possible to get a unique art piece.
