Dhokra, also known as bell metal casting, is indeed one of the oldest traditional metal casting techniques in India, with a history spanning over 4,000 years. This ancient craft utilizes the lost wax technique, also known as cire perdue, which is practiced by metalworkers in various regions including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal.
The origins of Dhokra can be traced back to the prehistoric times of the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro civilizations, making it an integral part of India's cultural heritage. The craft has been passed down through generations, preserved and refined over centuries.
The process of Dhokra metal casting is entirely handmade and involves a unique 13-stage process. It begins with the creation of a clay model, onto which layers of wax are applied to form the desired shape. The wax-coated model is then covered in layers of clay to create a mold. After drying, the mold is heated, causing the wax to melt and flow out, leaving behind a cavity. Molten metal, typically an alloy of brass, nickel, and zinc, is then poured into the mold. Once cooled and solidified, the clay mold is broken away to reveal the intricately detailed metal casting.
Dhokra metalwork is known for its antique appearance, owing to the alloy composition and the craftsmanship involved in the casting process. The finished products often feature intricate designs inspired by nature, mythology, and everyday life, reflecting the cultural ethos of the regions where Dhokra is practiced. Today, Dhokra continues to be cherished as both a traditional craft and a form of artistic expression, with artisans preserving this ancient technique while also adapting it to contemporary tastes and trends.

We offer free shipping on all domestic orders above INR 700. For orders below INR 700, standard shipping charges will apply and will be calculated at checkout.

International Shipping Policy
